MMFF 2008 AWARDS NIGHT RESULT

Well, well, well… I was right with some… Like Anne winning best actress… FYI, I haven’t seen the film yet. But that was the only material that requires “real” acting aside from Magkaibigan… But honestly I was hoping more for Aiai to win… It’s a lot more difficult to make people laugh than make them sympathize to you…

Desperadas 2

On the first day of MMFF, my sister and I decided to watch 3 movies in a row- Desperadas 2, Tanging Ina Niyong Lahat and Iskul Bukol. Unfortunately Due to overcrowding and long queues in the cinema, we were only able to watch Desperadas 2.

The film was overall BETTER than the first movie. Ogie Alcasid definitely hightened the story to a level worthy to stand side-by-side Vic Sotto and Aiai Delas Alas. It was a none-dull moment movie. All of the actress did pretty well in this film including Rufa Guttierez and Marian Rivera. I think this is really Marian’s strength in acting. She knows how to deliver comic lines at the right time. Rufa did not really had to do much in this film since the character was really seemed to be made for her ONLY.Even the boys in this film, Wendell Ramos, Jay-R and Will Devaughn were very effective.

There’s nothing really much bad in this film. I can’t even think of one. So Just go watch it. Don’t want to tell you the story but it’s definitely a good film. 8/10

I’m Back! MMFF season

Wow! It’s been a long time since my last post… Sorry folks… I took NMAT last december 14… I was also very busy with my curricular activities… But anyway, I’m back and I have a lot to tell… Let’s go retrospective from the recent one…

This month is again another Metro Manila Film Festival month… There are plenty of good films to watch this season… Each has a unique storyline… To make a short intro about them (this is based on their trailers). First one, Baler… It’s a love story that happened during warring periods here in the Philippines. From what I have seen in their trailers, it seems that this film has a great chance of winning this year’s best film if and only if gross income will not be part of the criteria (which is the case for the past two or so years)…  Another film is entitled Dayo… This is the first animated film to enter the history of the festival… But this is not the first full-blown Filipino Animated Film. From what I read, it’s about folklores here in the Philippines with a twist… Like they made the mananaggal (a vampire like, but with wings and no feet) a friendly one. Another film in this year is Desparadas 2: All They Need is More Love. Well, the plot basically is about the sister’s long lost sibling (which happens to be another sister). This new sister of theirs is a princess of a certain island, I can’t remember the name… Another film is the return of Aiai delas Alas and Eugene Domingo tandem, Tanging Ina Niyong Lahat…  The plot puts the lead character, played by Aiai, as the new president of the Philippines. The first film was good. So I’m expecting BIG from this. Vic Sotto has another entry for this year’s MMFF… Unfortunately (or maybe fortunately), it is not another sequel of Enteng Kabisote. This time, the reunion of the old classmates in Iskul Bukol will be seen in the silver screen. There are so many stars in this movie aside from Vic… Among them are Sharon Cuneta, Joey De Leon and Tito Sotto. This film is one of the expected high-grossing film this season alongside Tanging Ina Niyong Lahat and Desperadas 2. An entry by OctoArts is casted by Kapamilya and Kapuso Stars. Katrina Halili, Diana Zubiri and Jennylyn Mercado from GMA 7 and Alexandra de Rossi and another artists from ABS-CBN (sorry can’t remember his name… But I know it has something to do with chocolate) are among them. The film is entitled One Night Only. The story revolves at a certain motel where people do all their crazy sexcapades… It is a comedy film… Don’t really know much about this film. Then there’s Magakaibigan. This is said to be based from a true story (from Rudy Fernandez). It’s about friendship in time of problem (one of them was diagnosed of cancer). This one will probably give another acting award to Jinggoy Estrada. This has a great chance of winning this year’s best film also if gross income is not part of the criteria. Lastly, but definitely not the least, probably the most-number-of-sequels-ever-made Filipino Film, Shake Rattle N Roll. This is the only horror/suspense in the festival. I saw the trailers but wasn’t really that happy with the plot of all 3 stories. I think it’s a scary movie for kids.

So here are my predictions:

Best Film will either be (in order of what I think will most likely be):

Iskul Bukol

Tanging Ina Niyong Lahat

Desperadas 2

Best Actor:

Jinngoy Estrada (I don’t think Jericho Rosales has much fight against him)

Ogie Alacasid

Best Actress:

Aiai Delas Alas

Dawn Zulueta

Anne Curtis

Best Supporting Actress:

Maricel

Eugene Domingo

Gross of Film after 1 week

1. Iskul Bukol

2-3. Desperadas 2/ Shake Rattle N Roll

4. Tanging Ina Niyong Lahat

5. One Night Only

6-8. Baler/Magkaibigan/Dayo

Possible Controversies:

1. Ogie Alcasid winning Best Actor beating Jinggoy and Boyet

2. Star Cinema complaining why Iskul Bukol won best picture

3. Anne winning Best Actress

Mag-ingat Ka Sa Kulam – Movie Review

This film is very much anticipated for three reasons: 1) the movie is made by Regal Films – a film company that gave us the best Filipino films for the past few years; 2) the cast is very porwerful (Judy Ann Santos – best actress and Dennis Trillo – best actor); 3) and three, the movie was made almost a year. So with these ingredients, one will probably expect a quality horror film… NOT!

The movie opened with Mira (Judy Ann) driving a car, and having a road accident. Because of this, she will have amnesia. The movie starts its conflict when Mira was dreaming walking in the hospital alley, and seeing blood all over the walls. She then wakes up. The next scene, they returned home from the hospital. Before she entered their house, she saw an old lady looking at her from afar (inside the house). Then, the movie builds its conflict when Mira’s business partner went to their house. He and Mira had a private conversation. In that conversation, he said that they were suppose to elope but she never came. Surprisingly, this business partner of her is also her lover. But Mira can’t remember anything.

The next scene was the “scare scenes”.Blah blah blah…

Dennis suggested to her that she goes to see a doctor coz what she has been seeing (ghost) is probably caused by her accident. In the hospital, Mira’s lover came from out of nowhere, and told her that she has a twin sister, Maria. He then left the premises telling Mira that if she wants to know her past, she will just have to call him.

When Mira and Dennis arrived at their house, she was very bothered with the information she just knew. In the middle of the night, while Dennis was asleep, she looked for the contact number of her lover.

They decided to meet, and her lover took her to the mental hospital where her sister was confined. She didn’t mention anything about her sister to Dennis because she loathed her sister. When they met with the doctor of her sister, she was informed that her sister died. The doctors have no one to inform so they decided to donate the body in one of the med schools. Because of this, Mira was furious. When they went outside the hospital, Dennis comes in the picture. He will think that Judy Ann is having an affair with her business partner. Dennis and her business partner will have a fist fight. Then Judy Ann and Dennis will leave. Mira explains to Dennis why he never told him about her sister. Interistingly, her mother was a witch (mangkukulam). She and her twin sister was being taught of the craft. Mira however was reluctant. She left their home and went to Manila leaving her sister. One day, her mother died. Her twin sister became crazy causing Mira to put her to the mental hospital.

The following day, Mira opened her sisters luggage bag which the doctor gave to her the day they went to the mental hospital. She then saw her sister’s wiccan book. After touching it, she remembered everything. The day before the accident, she went to visit her sister. Maria was very angry with her. She attacked Mira and pulled her hair. When Mira left, Maria performed a soul transfer ritual using Mira’s hair that she pulled. That was the cause of Mira’s accident. Maria’s soul was transferred to Mira and Mira’s soul to Maria’s body. Because Maria didn’t know how to drive, she had the car accident. Unfortunately, she suffered from amnesia.

After her memory returned, she became evil again. She wanted to kill Dennis and their daughter. Fortunately, before Mira went to see her sister, she left a video of herself telling Dennis how to vanquish her sister.

To make the story short, Dennis did what Mira said in the video. The END.

The movie was a little boring. I was able to predict what will be the twist (soul switching) in the story even before the first half ended. The scare scenes wasn’t scary at all. There was only one scene that was scary for me. The scene after Mira’s lover committed suicide, Dennis saw and old lady inside their house, looking at him, and laughing. That scene was a little freaky. Aside from that, the other scenes were a little dull. Kris Bernal and Mart Escudero were useless to the movie. Removing them would’ve made Regal saved more money. Kris and Mart were as important as the sofa in one of those scenes. Pathetic.

Overall, I was very disappointed. This film is only  2/10. If you’re planning to watch this film, you should consider it again. If you are looking for real horror movie, try something else.
